A Sneak Peek Into the Bash Decorations!

Thanks to Deco leaders and designers Cheyne, Laura and Larry, the Jingle Bash on November 20th is going to have some amazing handmade decorations. And super big thanks to all of our great volunteers for their help making it happen: David, Brenda (former beloved Etsy Dallas member), Maggie, Patricia, Alyssa, Mia, Debbie, Holly, Dacia, Bonnie, Christina and Keith, Thomas, Pamela and Dylan!

Laura shows off her lovely leaves!

Men + Their Tools (Larry, David)

Greatness happens when crafters unite.

Former beloved Etsy Dallas member, Brenda, came out to help.

In her Bash delirium, Cheyne realizes she only needs one hand to get the job done.

These pictures do not do justice to the amazingly creative and handmade decorations the group made this past weekend. Come to the Palladium on November 20th to behold the craftiness yourself! More info: www.handmadebash.com

Free DIY Crafts with Oil and Cotton

The Jingle Bash isn't just about shopping for handmade art and crafts. It's also about making your own handmade creation. This November 20th, head over to the Palladium where the Bash will feature free DIY crafts to get shoppers in the holiday spirit. Oil and Cotton, will have the supplies and know-how on-hand for you to make your choice of either a paper ornament or beautiful paper angel. Arrive early - supplies are limited!

What Is Oil and Cotton?
Oil and Cotton, a new arts and crafts studio, opened this past September, shortly after owners Shannon Driscoll and Kayli House Cusick met while volunteering for Oak Cliff's Better Block, a neighborhood improvement project that included a free public art studio.

Blending an appreciation of the past with current art practices, Oil and Cotton provides creative space for education, exhibition, performance and exchange between the public and the art community. Their hands-on classes are taught by professionals with knowledge of both traditional and contemporary practice.

About the Owners
Shannon had been working as an art conservator of works on paper and instructor of adult workshops in traditional handcrafts and materials-based projects. Kayli was a piano teacher, composer, and children’s arts curriculum writer who had recently relocated from Brooklyn.

Their motivating philosophy is to make do with what you've got by placing a high value on the resourcefulness within each person. They are dedicated to doing things the old-fashioned way, whether through the reuse or repurposing of materials (turning fallen walnuts into inks) and accepting the possibilities of what can be created by hand. The ladies of Oil and Cotton honor the pioneering spirit of our elders and the character of our community.

What's In a Name?
Both oil and cotton are natural resources of Dallas and are the foundation of the most basic art materials. Oil is a binder in paint and inks. Cotton is used to produce textiles like fabric, canvas and paper. The arts, like oil and cotton, provide a canvas and medium that bind our community together.

Bash Bucks Are Back!

For the third show in a row, we are pleased to offer the Bash Bucks program for our amazing supporters - you! - and this year we're offering even more chances to win. Get this: Bash Bucks are our own gift certificates that spend just like money at our shows. Free money!

Still not sold yet? Well, we like to give them away!

The only way to get Bash Bucks is to win during our upcoming blog and Twitter contests, running October 27th to November 15th.

At the beginning of the contest, we'll post the rules and directions here on our blog. Good news! There is no limit to your number of entries both on the blog and on Twitter. Winners will be picked at random at the end of each contest - and this is the awesome part: We'll choose one winner on the blog and TWO winners on Twitter. The blog winner will receive $30 in Bash Bucks, one twitter winner will receive $30 and one will receive $40 in Bash Bucks, to be spent at the upcoming Jingle Bash on November 20th.

(Psst! We also have some extra surprise Bash Bucks contests around the corner - but you have to stay tuned to the blog to find out all about 'em.)

So what's up with the Bucks, you ask? You can use them to buy anything your little heart desires from participating artists at the upcoming Jingle Bash on November 20th. (But if your little heart desires booze provided by The Palladium, you'll have to whip out some real cash.)

Seriously, they're kind of awesome. But don't take our word for it - read what one of our previous Bash Bucks winners has to say:
I won Bash Bucks on the Etsy Dallas blog for the last Spring Bash. I absolutely loved that it gave me a chance to pre-shop the Bash artists. When I won, I already knew exactly what I wanted to spend them on. I purchased two necklaces from Maggie May I - I still love them!

-Mylynka, winner of Bash Bucks for the Spring Bash 2010
So get your retweet button finger warmed up and stay tuned to this blog for more details. It's almost time!

On the Road with Etsy Dallas: Renegade Chicago

In mid-September I had the pleasure of joining up with fellow Etsy Dallas members OneUpDesigns as well as fellow Texas Etsians 2Enju, MadelineWood, SquidInkKollective, and RoboRoku at the 8th Annual Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago.

I had a blast on the drive. Lynnea & Brian of SquidInkKollective drove up from Austin, picked me up in Dallas and after we played a serious game of tetris with two entire businesses' worth of stock in one vehicle, we headed up through Oklahoma and St. Louis. We all gratefully crashed in Peoria, Illinois, where one of my best friends from college is currently in graduate school at Bradley University. We might have been delirious by the time she showed us what we thought was the greatest thing Peoria had to offer. The next day, we finished the drive into Chicago and arrived at the home of our fantastic hostess, Tamara. Tamara is better known as TPDesign, one of the founding members of EtsyDallas. These days, she lives happily with her husband and son in a beautiful house right outside Chicago. Tamara took us to see all sorts of fantastic things Chicago has to offer.

I fell in love with the city - we really packed in some fun stuff before the craft fair including a trip to the aquarium, some delicious vegetarian restaurants (and Chicago deep dish pizza, no doubt!) and some nerd-tastic bookstores (plus Quimby's, a comic shop with a great selection of zines and limited edition art books).

Saturday and Sunday were devoted to the unique experience of Renegade Chicago! I was honored to be among more than 300 of the most talented hand makers the nation has to offer. Plus? Fair food and a marching band! Yes. Please. And the shoppers? Almost as sweet and fun as Dallas shoppers - which is a compliment indeed!

I loved every second of the entire trip and can't wait until next year when I may [hopefully] make the trip again. The drive home did present a pretty great little pit stop - an antique mall named for the huge pink elephant on the front lawn.

You can see additional photos of our trip here.

What I did this summer by Amanda from Loop and Lil

The summer I finally finished up a project I'd been working on for several months:

And it came out perfectly:

This summer, we welcomed our first child, Violet Louise, to our family. I've taken a little break from cutting fabric and sewing in favor of swaddling and burping (her). So my Etsy shop is a little sparse for now, but will be restocked just as soon as I can get a full night's sleep!

Do check out some of the goodies still in Loop and Lil's Etsy shop, like this a-freaking-dorable screen printed Hat Tee.
