13 Tips for Shopping the 2019 Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash Like a Pro

Bash-Graphic-v3-1500x1500.jpg

The highly anticipated Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash is November 9 at Gilley’s Dallas. Admission is free! We will have an adorable photo booth and fun make-and-take crafts. Here are a few tips for making the most of your Jingle Bash shopping experience ...

  1. Bring your favorite shopping buddies and be sure your phone or camera is charged. There are fun photo booths in the works and you’re going to want those selfies. Don’t forget to tag @etsydallas so we can see too!

  2. Prep a shopping list before Bash Day so you won’t forget anyone or anything. Don’t forget that Christmas, winter holidays, and wonderful family gatherings will be here before you know it. You can even browse the 2019 Jingle Bash Artists to plan your must-have stops for the day.

  3. Grab a map when you arrive so you can head straight to your favorite booths. We will have some Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash swag at our information booth - get ‘em while supplies last! And be sure to visit the free make-and-take craft table hosted by the Creative Arts Center of Dallas.

  4. Bring a tote bag for the goodies you buy to keep your hands free to shop all the gorgeous handmade pieces our artists will have at the Jingle Bash. We will have extra totes for sale but supplies are limited.

  5. The first 50 adult shoppers in line get our coveted Bash Bags — it’s the first 50 who show up, y’all. Please don’t yell at our volunteers if you weren’t in the first 50. We promise there is plenty of amazing work available for purchase at the Bash. We’re all in this to support handmade artists, right? We are always excited with the contributions for the Bash Bags. Those 50 lucky shoppers who are first in line will love what they find inside.

  6. Don’t stress if you arrive at opening to see people lined up outside the door. Experienced Bash shoppers may be there to get their hands on our Bash Bags or to get first dibs in the booths. Once doors open, everyone gets ushered right in without a wait. Pro tip: If crowds aren’t your thing, you probably don’t want to arrive in the first hour.

  7. Our all-volunteer leadership team works on planning for our Bashes all year long! We are passionate about putting on an event you will love but we can’t control the weather or traffic. If you’re planning to wait in the line before the show, be prepared.

  8. Expect traffic. Plan your route ahead of time. It’s downtown Dallas, y’all. Check the news for construction or any big events that may affect your route. Consider carpooling with friends or taking DART if driving downtown stresses you out.

  9. Thankfully there is parking at Gilley’s for $5. We will have tasty food trucks and a bar onsite as well.

  10. Expect a crowd. We love how the community comes out to show support for our artists! If you want to browse with a little more elbow room, arrive after lunch. Don’t worry. Our artists are stocked for the whole day.

  11. You may want to leave the stroller in the car or at home. If possible, wearing your little one may make shopping the Bash easier for you and other shoppers trying to navigate the aisles.

  12. Find the Etsy Dallas table to find out how to win Bash Bucks (that’s money that only works at this Bash, y’all). We want to give you extra $$ to spend at the Bash, so don’t miss out!

  13. If you haven’t already, sign up for our newsletter. We promise we only send out fun and happy emails. It’s a great way to get the scoop on all our upcoming events.

Etsy, Inc. sponsors 2017 Etsy Dallas Jingle Bash

We are honored and thrilled to have Etsy, Inc. as our official sponsor for the Jingle Bash. As you can probably guess, we are huge fans of Etsy around here. Etsy was founded in 2005 and now boasts buyers and sellers from nearly every country in the world.

Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. Etsy’s mission is to Keep Commerce Human. You can read more about the positive impact Etsy has on people and the planet.

Creativity Camp: Basic Shibori Dyeing

Welcome back! This week, we are making over some old white cotton shirts with shibori, a Japanese folding technique to create dyed patterns in fabric. You can use this folding method with any type of modern dye, or the beautiful, traditional indigo vat. For simplicity's sake, we are using Rit Dye on the stove top this time.

Gather your supplies, and keep reading for the tutorial. We need a bottle of dye, half a cup of salt, a squirt of dish soap, a gallon of water in a large pot, tongs, fabric or clothing, and rubber bands/clips/pipe cleaners/popcicle sticks.

IMG_5554.JPG

First, let's do an accordion fold on your item of clothing. Fold your item in half. Then fold the top half back to line up with the edge. Flip over your item and fold the other side back and match the edge again. Now fold the sleeves back. The goal is to make all the edges line up evenly for the next step. (You can stop here, And move on to rubber bands or keep on like the photo.) Now, fold one bottom corner to the edge to make a triangle. Flip the item over, and fold the triangle up along the edge. Flip and fold, flip and fold triangles all the way to the end.

Use rubber bands, bottle caps, clips, pipe cleaners, and popsicle sticks to create resist patterns. Now let's prepare the dye.

Use rubber bands, bottle caps, clips, pipe cleaners, and popsicle sticks to create resist patterns. Now let's prepare the dye.

IMG_5535.JPG

This part is for adults or older kids. Be careful! Turn your stove on high to boil, and add the salt. Once dissolved, add the dye and a small squirt of dish soap. (We are using black on small items for saturated colors, so we only used half the recommended water.) Reduce your stove to medium heat, and dye your items for 30 minutes.

IMG_5525.JPG

Use your tongs to remove your folds, allowing the dye water to drain as much as possible.

IMG_5524.JPG

Rinse your items in the sink until the water runs mostly clear, then remove your rubber bands and clips.  (Don't use dye in porcelain or porous sinks, it will absolutely stain! You can take them straight to the washer, but your whites may not be as white.)

IMG_5545.JPG

Wash your items on cold with detergent, and dry them. From left, the patterns are the square accordion fold with popsicle stick resist, the pipe cleaner resist, the triangle accordion fold with bottle cap resist, and the binder clips resist.

I hope you enjoyed this project! Now you can make tea towels, napkins, pillow cases, wall hangings, and all sorts of good stuff! Be sure to tag us @etsydallas #EDCreativityCamp if you try it!

P.S. Use gloves! Lol!

Creativity Camp: DIY Superhero Costume

Happy Monday! This week's craft takes minutes, and costs nothing. Yes! That is my kind of crafting! It also brings up an important topic with your kiddos... recycling. Getting creative with something old is a wonderful way to recycle. Rummage through some colorful old t-shirts, and grab your scissors. This afternoon, we are becoming superheroes! BOOM!

IMG_4745.JPG

First, use chalk to draw out lines on the back of your shirt, and around the neckline where you will cut. WHACK!

IMG_4743.JPG
IMG_4746.JPG

Next, cut along the sides and those chalk lines. Be careful not to stretch the jersey or the edges will curl. BAM!

IMG_4748.JPG

Now, find the longest length in your remaining fabric, and chalk out a strip for the mask. We used the design from the front of the shirt to create some interest. You can also use the design on the cape instead! SWISH!

IMG_4749.JPG

Cut out the mask, and chalk and cut the eye-holes as well.  Tip: it's easier to cut circles if you fold them in half. BANG!

IMG_4754.JPG

You could stop here, or take it to the next level with a little fabric paint and a sponge.

My daughter came up with a clever super hero name, The Galigator! So, we picked a green shirt, and I cut a sponge into a triangle so she could stamp spikes down the back.   It may help to mark out the design in chalk first to keep things straight. SPLAT!

IMG_4755.JPG
IMG_4741.JPG

Let the paint dry, and your imagination run wild! You are brave, and strong, and bright! KA-POW!

IMG_4757.JPG

Thanks for joining us! See you next Monday for another fun project. We would love to see your little superheroes in action, so tag us on Instagram! @etsydallas #EDCreativityCamp

Sponsor spotlight: Whipped Up Wonderful

We love Whipped Up Wonderful’s amazing line of bath bombs, bubble bars and perfumes. Alexis is a top seller of bath bombs on Etsy for a reason. You’ll love her items, all made with biodegradable and renewable ingredients. Everything in her shop is cruelty free and most are vegan.

Be sure to stop by her booth and treat yourself at the Spring Bash this Sunday, May 7, at Gilley's Dallas. We will be there 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Alexis took a quick break from whipping up all the things for a Q&A with us ...

What are you most looking forward to for the 2017 Spring Bash?

Shopping! I always look forward to getting to meet some local makers.

Is your shop offering anything new/special/different at the Bash?

I’ll be offering some debut products, like my rainy days bath bombs , my bath macarons, and hopefully my new Jelly Bean Bath Melts.

What is your favorite part of prepping for the Spring Bash?

I love planning my booth. Spring and Summer require different looks than Fall shows, so I get to really have fun and experiment. Also the time crunch - nothing makes you more creative than a deadline!

What makes this event special for you?

This will be the first year I’m attending the show not only as a vendor, but as part of the Etsy Dallas Leadership Team! I always make time for the Bash’s any way (being that they are the best independent handmade art and craft show in Dallas), but being such a part of making this show happen makes it all the more special.

DIY: Valentine's Day Cards

Want to make a thoughtful handmade Valentine's Day card for someone special (or you waited till the last minute and there are zero cards left at the store?) We have a fun and easy tutorial for you today!

Materials needed:
Cardstock - folded in half
Heart cut out of a piece of paper
Embroidery needle
Embroidery floss in your choice of color (or go crazy with several!)

  1. Take your heart cutout and trace it lightly on the front of your card - use a pencil for this part
  2. Using your embroidery needle poke holes around the heart tracing - be sure to space them out. For the heart on the left you will also need to poke a hole in the center of the heart.
  3. Once all the holes have been made, erase the pencil tracing. Select your embroidery floss color.
  4. Starting from the top of the heart start making big stitches from each hole to the center.
  5. Keep working your way around the heart. You can change colors part way through too.
  6. Once complete, tie a knot on the back side of the card to secure the floss and write a message of your choice!
Instead of making stitches through the center you can randomly make stitches all around the hear for a more abstract look, or do lines straight across for a clean look.

Happy Valentine's Day!

#LoveLetters

This month, our team joined DoDomething.org's Love Letter campaign to make Valentines Day cards for senior citizens in our community that are home bound and face isolation due to disability, location, and language barriers. It was a really fun project that family and friends participated in and we got cards from all over Dallas and Austin too!

In total we made over 100 handmade cards that Meals on Wheels will deliver over the next few days, and we hope it will put smiles on many faces!
